During public comment teachers representing Snowdon and Sedan elementary schools asked the Farmersville Unified board to help fund third-grade field trips to the Monterey Bay Aquarium so all students can participate.
"We hope that you can help us overcome that challenge and open this door for them," said Diana Puga, a third-grade dual-language teacher at Snowden Elementary, who said 106 students would participate and described the trip as "a once in a lifetime opportunity." Puga said families volunteer and fundraise but still face financial barriers.
Megan Hoyt, a third-grade teacher at Sedan Elementary, told trustees the estimated cost for buses and the two-day trip is "approximately $10,000," and that district administration has offered $3,000 to contribute. "We are asking will the board provide the financial support needed so that all the former school third grader students can continue this long standing tradition together," Hoyt said.
Teachers said they will present formal fundraiser proposals at the next board meeting but urged the board to consider district support to ensure site equity; speakers contrasted Snowdon's need with Hester, which Hoyt said had full funding for its trip.
The board did not take immediate action during public comment; trustees acknowledged the requests and noted staff will follow up through the board’s budget and program processes.
The public comment record indicates teachers will return with formal proposals for board consideration.
