The Atoka City Council approved the purchase of a 2026 Kenworth T880 dump truck for $188,005.46 to replace older equipment, including a 2003 Peterbilt that staff said has been frequently in the shop and out of service.
City staff and equipment representatives described the procurement, which used a Sourcewell contract, as a cost-effective replacement that will reduce repeated repair costs and time spent driving for materials. A vendor representative said the truck’s automatic transmission and locally available technicians will simplify maintenance and broaden the pool of drivers, since newer drivers often cannot operate manual transmissions.
Public-works staff said the new vehicle would allow in-house hauling of asphalt and materials for street repairs and ditch work, cutting per-trip contractor costs. “If we had something like this right here, you know, it’s not costing us extra $1,500 to $2,000 per trip,” a city crew member said during the presentation.
Council approved the purchase by roll-call vote; the motion passed with recorded yes votes from Miss Pogue, Mister McDaniel, Miss McGee, Mister Sheryl and Mister Cathy.
