Quarterly reports: building permits, fire operations and street maintenance updates presented to council
Summary
Shannon Wiggins, Fire Chief Colby McBride and Mike Howell presented quarterly updates: building and code reported permit and inspection counts and common violations; the fire chief highlighted call patterns, pre-fire planning and a mapping project; streets reported chip-seal work, pothole repairs and park maintenance.
At the Dec. 16 meeting the council received routine quarterly reports from the building and code, fire, and streets/parks/maintenance departments.
Shannon Wiggins reported on Aug.–Oct. activity for the building and code division: 139 code violations (39 weed-control citations, 27 work-without-permit, 22 trash/debris), 386 code inspections, and 253 building permits issued (including 12 short-term rentals and five certificates of occupancy). She invited questions and none were asked.
Fire Chief Colby McBride reviewed the quarter's emergency calls and operational items. McBride said the department's busiest times are roughly from early morning through late evening and noted a decrease in medical/rescue calls compared with the prior year. He highlighted a new solar-powered storm siren installed in Tamarack, the department's pre-fire planning that maps buildings and Knox box locations for quicker response, and a recent toy drive involving city staff.
Mike Howell presented streets and parks work: winterizing equipment, preparing a sanding machine, approximately 5.22 cubic yards of asphalt repair, 1,481 potholes filled this quarter, 15 culverts installed for new residents, chip-seal projects on Loom Bay, Westview, Valley View and Tamarack, and planting and mulch work at the community center (reported at ~95% complete).
Council accepted the reports and thanked staff for their work; the presentations provided background referenced later during discussion of inspection capacity for subdivisions.
