Sarah Lentz was reelected chair of the Portland Board of Public Education on Dec. 9 after a nomination from Board member Bridal and a roll-call vote in which all members but one voiced support.
At the start of the board’s meeting at Casco Bay High School, Bridal formally nominated Lentz. With no other nominees, the board closed nominations and proceeded to vote. Doctor Warren conducted a roll-call vote: Member Ali Ali cast the only dissent; all other voting members named Sarah Lentz. Lentz thanked her colleagues after the motion passed and said she looked forward to continuing the work.
Later in the meeting, Board member Opperman nominated Micky Bondo for vice chair. Bondo accepted the nomination and framed her acceptance as “a call for accountability and action.” The board then voted by roll call, and every voting member said “Mickey Bondo,” making the selection unanimous.
The elections followed an opening in which Lentz offered an apology for remarks at the previous meeting that several community members and speakers said caused harm. Lentz said she would reach out individually to those who had given public comment previously and described a draft resolution — coauthored with Vice Chair Bondo — with concrete action steps the board intends to consider.
The ceremony earlier in the meeting included the swearing-in of reelected adult members and seated student representatives by City Clerk Ashley Rand. The board proceeded to other agenda items including public comment, presentations, and policy reviews.
What’s next: The board said it expects to finalize the language of the draft resolution discussed by Lentz and Bondo at a future meeting.
