Eaton County Treasurer Darius Rainette told commissioners the Eaton County Land Bank has purchased the six-acre Hohner Mill site in Eaton Rapids for a nominal $10 purchase price, with the previous out-of-state owner paying $21,345 in delinquent back taxes as part of the transaction.
Rainette said the property has been an eyesore and a public-health concern and that the county inherited a lengthy negotiation begun by his predecessor. He said the land bank will work with the city of Eaton Rapids and the public to develop a plan for the site and then pursue state and federal grants to implement improvements. He described options including demolition of outbuildings and securing the site while seeking incremental change over time.
Rainette said the county has no immediate funds dedicated to rehab and will pursue grant funding and incremental work, and that the land bank’s goal is to return the site to productive use for the city and the county.
