At its Dec. 4 meeting, the Cannon County Commission received nominations to fill a vacancy in the 2nd District but did not make a final appointment, instead placing the matter on the January agenda.
A meeting speaker announced two nominees: Marty Williams from the Gasway community and James Atkins from the Aubertown community and urged that either would serve the district well. The nominator also encouraged the candidate not chosen to consider running in the next election.
During discussion one speaker said, “I’m gonna cast my vote for Mitchell Weeks,” but the commission did not announce a final selection at this meeting. A member noted a statutory or procedural time frame, observing the commission has "120 days" to fill the vacancy.
The chair polled members and recorded verbal votes; after the poll the chair said the topic would be placed on the January agenda for further action. The commission did not adopt an appointment at this session.
