Kalamazoo County approves funding to expand storage lockers and staff for shelter services

Commissioner Wheeler moved (and the board approved) a transfer from the housing millage fund (Fund 297) to the transitional housing fund (Fund 296) to create two new buildings and grounds positions to support operations at the Landing Place; the motion passed by roll call with eight yes votes.
Separately, the board approved an American Rescue Plan Act agreement with Ministry with Community for $17,200 to expand secured interior locker storage for people experiencing housing instability. Administrator and partners noted the expanded 33‑locker interior system is an interim step while staff explore larger exterior storage options that will require additional planning and potential construction.
Andrea Trammell, administrator of community services, told the board the expanded locker program will add 33 lockers to an existing 150‑locker system and that there is a constant wait list; she thanked commissioners for the funding and said temporary overnight shelter preparations are progressing.
Administration also reported the Landing Place received full site plan approval and permits and is working with a contractor to finalize a phased construction and move‑in timeline.
