Florence town councilors voted on Nov. 18 to disapprove a proposed cooperative purchase and installation of an electronic message center (EMC) at Fire Station 2 after members raised objections to the sign’s cost, design and location.
Town staff reported that Jared (staff lead) had a bereavement and was absent but that one sign was under contract and ready to move forward. The item requested authority to use a GPA cooperative agreement (Duncor LLC / Summit West Signs) for a double‑sided display at Fire Station 2 at a not‑to‑exceed price of $149,045.95.
Multiple council members criticized the proposal. Councilmember Bensina said the design appeared overdesigned and questioned how much of the price was for the LED panel versus the base and structural work; Vice Mayor Adams and others said the vetted locations were suboptimal and likely to serve traffic leaving town rather than attracting visitors entering Florence. Members also noted budget constraints (the CIP contained $250,000 for the project) and recommended revisiting the design and prioritizing the 79 & Main location if only one sign is built.
After discussion Vice Mayor Adams moved to disapprove the item and requested a future work session to review costs, alternate designs and utility connections, and to reconsider optimal locations. The motion to disapprove was seconded and carried; the mayor asked staff to keep Jared and his family in the council’s prayers.
