Brockton High student proposes in‑school ‘flex period’ to ease club/sports conflicts

Robert, the student representative at Brockton High School, told the Brockton School Committee on Dec. 2 that many students miss club meetings because practices and games start immediately after the final bell and proposed a short in‑day “flex period” for clubs and tutoring.
Robert said club meetings now run right after school and that student athletes often must choose between practice and extracurricular participation. “So for students that are student athletes, but they also wanna be engaged in things like NHS or student advisory committee…many of them can't even attend,” he said, proposing a 30‑ to 45‑minute block once or twice a week to allow broader participation without forcing students to skip practices.
Superintendent Dr. Tiliani and committee members said the proposal comes at an opportune time: the district is reviewing Brockton High School’s schedule with the teachers' union. Chair Tony Rodriguez also noted the committee’s student representative role in surfacing student needs. Committee members praised the idea: Mister Gomes said accommodating a 30‑ to 45‑minute meeting window would be “phenomenal,” and Miss Oliver asked for clarification on how the block would address travel and sports conflicts.
The superintendent said the schedule review underway could incorporate a flex period if feasible and agreed to include the proposal in those conversations with the union and staff. No formal motion or vote was taken on the proposal at the Dec. 2 meeting.
The next procedural step is for district staff and the teachers' union to consider the proposal during the scheduled schedule review; committee members asked the superintendent’s team to follow up with more detail as planning continues.
