Danville BZA approves 30-foot light-pole height for school transportation site

The Danville Board of Zoning Appeals approved a request from Danville Community School Corporation (BZA-2025-2235) to permit parking-lot light fixtures up to 30 feet high, exceeding the Unified Development Ordinance 25-foot standard. Staff said the school received site-plan approval previously but requires the variance because the proposed light poles exceed the UDO limit.
Andy German of ANZ Engineering, the civil engineer on the project, explained the taller poles are intended to project lighting over taller buses so parking and maneuvering areas are free of dark spots. "The main reason for the request is to get poles high enough to be able to project lighting over the taller vehicles that would be in the lot," German said. He told the board the design uses LED fixtures with a sharp cutoff and that the team submitted photometric data to demonstrate limited off-site glare.
A public attendee asked whether neighbors would be blinded by the lights; staff and the engineer responded that a retained tree line and the LED fixtures’ cutoff would limit off-site lighting. After the engineer’s presentation a board member moved to approve the variance, the motion was seconded by the presiding officer, and the board approved the petition by roll call with five ayes recorded. Conditions noted in the motion will be attached to the adopted approval.
Staff also previewed a future petition for a sign variance at the Tanana Danville complex; no action was taken on that item tonight.
