Lewiston School Committee approves choir field trip to ACDA honors, then enters executive session

The Lewiston School Committee on Dec. 1 unanimously approved a field trip request for five Lewiston High School choral students to attend the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Eastern Region honors choir in Providence, R.I.

Moe Brown, the LHS choir director, said five students were accepted to the regional honors choirs from an audition pool he estimated at roughly 7,600 applicants and that travel and festival housing would be provided. Brown told the committee the cost will be covered by district budget dollars that had been allocated for concerts at the Franco Center and were available after venue changes. Member Boden moved to approve the field trip and the motion was seconded; the transcript records the vote as unanimous and the director and students were wished well.

Later on the agenda the committee moved to enter executive session "to conduct a student disciplinary hearing," citing statutory authority read on the record; the committee went into executive session at 5:59 p.m. The public portion of the meeting did not include details of the disciplinary matter.

Other items during the meeting included a report that city council will meet the next night and a notice of a parking ban expected to begin tomorrow evening; a finance subcommittee update noted finalized audit results with a public presentation planned for January. Members also discussed future agenda items including procedural rules review at the first January meeting and a possible hiring-policy review prompted by public comment.

The committee adjourned the public session and entered executive session; no further votes in public were recorded.
