Pilot teen academy graduates 22 students; commission seeks funding to expand into high-school EMT program

Speaker 2 credited Bradley and Megan Atkinson of Montgomery County Public Schools with leading the program and said students expressed immediate interest in volunteering or pursuing careers in fire and EMS. "A majority of those students walked away and immediately were asking how they could get involved," Speaker 2 said.
The commission has submitted a budget request to hire someone to run an EMT program in the high schools; school officials are also exploring offering EMT instruction. If funded, the aim is to make EMT training available annually so students can graduate prepared to volunteer or work in local departments.
Next steps: the commission will track interest and, if approved in the budget process, seek to coordinate with Montgomery County Public Schools to launch the high-school EMT program in the next school year.
