Summary
Eaton County Sheriff asked commissioners to send a proposed Axon equipment and subscription amendment to Ways and Means for review; the board approved forwarding the request. Commissioners also heard updates on expiring police-service contracts with Windsor and Oneida and preliminary talks with Maple Valley schools.
The Eaton County sheriff asked the Board of Commissioners on Dec. 4 to advance a proposed amendment to the county’s Axon equipment and subscription agreements to the Ways and Means Committee for further review and negotiation.
The sheriff said the amendment would allow the county to recognize individual police-service contracts for Axon equipment and subscriptions, create a “graceful exit” structure to terminate or modify individual contracts without penalty, and secure fixed, predictable pricing and equipment replacement for up to five years. He said the projected first-year cost is essentially identical to the county’s existing obligation and that delaying action could increase future operational costs.
“The proposed structure enables us to recognize individual police service contracts as they relate to Axon equipment and associated subscription services,” the sheriff said, describing the amendment’s operational benefits and asking the board to move the proposal to Ways and Means. Commissioners moved, seconded, and approved by voice vote to advance the amendment to Ways and Means.
Separately, county staff and sheriff’s-office representatives updated the board on police-service discussions with Windsor Township and Oneida. Windsor has historically funded a full deputy and is evaluating a model that removes county subsidies; Oneida cannot afford a full FTE and is exploring cost-sharing arrangements. Officials said they are meeting with interested communities to identify partners that could jointly fund additional deputy positions; a tentative follow-up meeting with Maple Valley was scheduled.
Maple Valley’s superintendent has raised liability and cost concerns about placing a county deputy as a school-resource officer. County staff said any formal contract would likely be brought to Ways and Means because of the financial implications.
No contract amendments were approved at the meeting; the Axon amendment was referred to Ways and Means for review.
