Board recognizes student-athletes, CTE interns and career-development partners

The Haywood County Schools board opened its meeting by recognizing student accomplishments across multiple athletic programs and highlighting career and technical education (CTE) internships.
Athletics: Presenters from Tuscola and Pisga high schools and multiple coaches named all-conference and all-region athletes in football, soccer, cross country, golf, volleyball and tennis. Speakers singled out players including Ty Walker (conference defensive player of the year), Landon Pope (offensive player of the year with 2,157 yards and 30 total touchdowns as listed in the presentation), and others who earned all-conference recognition, state qualifying marks or college commitments.
CTE internships and career-development partners: Board members recognized dozens of student interns placed at local employers including Haywood Regional Medical Center and Mountain Laurel Dermatology, and thanked career-development coordinators and community partners for creating workplace-learning opportunities. The board noted that internships help students develop employability skills and strengthen local talent pipelines.
Award: The district was also noted as one of 14 North Carolina districts to receive an Action for Healthy Kids national award for innovation in nutrition education, for a farm-to-school taste-test project that served roasted local asparagus at four elementary schools.
Next steps: Recognitions were ceremonial; the board scheduled formal presentations for students who could not attend and will continue to highlight CTE and athletic achievements in future meetings.
