Staffing and special-education coverage: Green and HR staff described numerous hires and vacancies across the district, announced the new executive director of human resources Devon Stevens and said final interviews for several district-level positions are underway. Trustee Smith Thomas pressed for clarity about special-education assignments; HR staff responded that under Michigan Department of Education rules “you have to have an undergraduate degree” to sit in a special-education role and that substitutes may serve up to 90 calendar days, while alternate-route waivers are used for other candidates. Trustees expressed concern about continuity for vulnerable scholars and asked staff to develop internal pathways to improve placement stability.
Swing-space readiness and safety steps: Green reviewed logistics for a Jan. 5, 2026 move of Boerne scholars to swing spaces—K–5 students to Vandenberg and grades 6–8 to the former Southwell Regional Academic Campus on Evergreen—and said movers will arrive Dec. 15–16. She noted asbestos abatement and air monitoring work and said owners’ representative TJ from the bond team will walk campuses with staff; the board asked for a final written state/status report after the walkthrough. Student representative Paris Whitman told trustees the school will receive four new metal detectors and that monitored entrances will have security staff.
Public comment highlights: Betty Robinson, a former board president, used her three-minute allotment to sharply criticize district performance and conditions at Bussey, saying, “Bussey ... it's a hot mess,” and alleging lapses in supervision and communication with parents. The board thanked her for speaking; administration did not announce immediate operational corrections during the meeting but trustees acknowledged the need to follow up.
Community partnership announced: Vanessa Gregory Solomon introduced Team Vinnie Foundation, a community group formed to remove financial barriers for student athletes; Solomon said Team Vinnie has begun awarding scholarships to cover spirit packs and athletic costs and plans to work with the district to expand support.
What’s next: Trustees requested written follow-up on swing-space readiness after Friday’s site walkthrough, asked staff to present transportation and budget study sessions in the coming 30 days, and signaled they want a plan to improve staffing stability in special education.
