Resident questions notice and debris as Jasper Council approves nuisance charges

During the public-hearing portion of the meeting, the council considered nuisance-abatement costs for three properties. At 2705 Corona Avenue (property of Angelita Jackson, District 5), Miss Jackson spoke at length. She said she recently suffered a heart attack and stroke, did not receive notices while hospitalized, and raised concerns that contractors who excavated the property left debris and a damaged water main, making it difficult for her to mow and maintain the lot.
Miss Jackson said she attempted to contact the contractor at the number Brent McCarver provided but received no response and that she only later retrieved notices from her mailbox after leaving the hospital. Kathy (staff) presented the abatement cost of $325. The council noted nuisance-abatement costs are intended to cover city costs and said they could discuss water-board questions and debris cleanup with Brent and Councilman Moore after the meeting. The council moved to approve the $325 cost and voted unanimously.
The council then approved two additional nuisance-abatement charges: $175 for 607 West 7th Street (District 4) and $2,025 for Castle Village Trailer Park on Highway 5. No members of the public spoke against those items.
Council members did not alter the charges at the meeting; they suggested follow-up with staff to address the resident's concerns about contractor cleanup and notice delivery.
