Wheeling officials say Washington Avenue bridge demolition delayed; plaques to be removed before work

The city manager told the Wheeling City Council on Dec. 2 that demolition of the Washington Avenue bridge has been delayed by weather and that demolition is not expected to begin for a couple more weeks.
Councilors asked about anticipated timing and pedestrian access. "The anticipated completion date has not changed to our knowledge," the city manager said, referencing prior contractor schedules. The manager clarified that once the bridge closes for demolition there will be no pedestrian access.
When asked whether commemorative plaques on the bridge will be removed, the manager confirmed, "We are going to be taking the plaques off of the bridge." Councilors said residents had raised concerns about access prior to demolition.
The manager also recommended withdrawing a land and water conservation grant application this cycle because of deed questions and changed requirements, saying the city could not meet submission requirements in time. Council formally moved and approved withdrawal of the resolution from the agenda during the meeting.
No demolition start date was finalized at the meeting; officials characterized the delay as weather‑related and as affecting preparatory timelines.
