Greenlee County authorizes sealed bids for fairgrounds ball-field lighting

County engineer Reed Larson told the board staff had undervalued the cost of lighting when planning the fairgrounds redevelopment. Larson said two informal estimates produced ball-field lighting price points from about $260,000 to $350,000 for a single field and recommended soliciting sealed bids because the likely price exceeds $100,000.
Larson said staff will issue performance-based specifications — defining lumen and lighting performance levels rather than prescribing pole heights or exact materials — and will ask bidders to provide proposed pole heights, fixture counts, and schedules. "We want this ready to go for a decision at our first meeting in January," Larson said, noting the need to have fields operational for the little-league season.
Supervisors pressed staff on scope and aesthetics — LED vs. other fixtures, pole materials (metal vs. wooden poles), and whether reused poles might be proposed. Staff said aesthetics and schedule will be evaluation factors and that the board can award based on best value rather than lowest cost alone.
A supervisor moved and the board approved a motion granting staff permission to seek sealed bids to construct lighting for ball fields at the Greenlee County Fairgrounds and playground area; the motion passed by voice vote (ayes). Staff will return bids and a recommendation to the board in January.
