Board hears updates on bus route contract terminations and contractor compliance

One contractor currently holds 18 routes and remains out of compliance; staff said withholding payment per board instruction could mean those contractors won't receive the regular county check run and could experience a delay of several weeks.
Board members and staff discussed retention and fairness mechanisms: staff suggested documenting the practice that contractors who surrender a route mid‑year should not be eligible to apply for a replacement route (a practice historically used but not yet written into contract) and recommended bringing proposed policy language to a policy committee meeting.
Why it matters: Transportation contractors and drivers are essential to delivering students to school; payment timing and clear contracting rules affect availability and continuity of service. Staff said the district will offer terminated routes to qualified contractors once the contract termination becomes official and encouraged board members to expect an update on Thursday.
