Board approves lease changes with Colonel's Island Sport Fishing Club for volunteer fire facility

Under the approved plan the county will continue the existing $1,000-per-month arrangement through June 30, 2026, then begin a new contract effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029, at $2,000 per month. The club will assume responsibility for lawn care and pest control beginning January 1, 2026; the county will continue to cover electricity for the bay heaters used to protect apparatus in winter.
County staff estimated the combined prior support (lease plus services) cost roughly $21,000 per year; the new arrangement will raise lease receipts but shift some previously county-paid operational costs to the tenant. Commissioners discussed the arrangement's role in the county's volunteer fire service network and acknowledged the county may need to examine building or acquiring a staffed facility in the future.
The board approved the motion; one commissioner indicated a dissenting vote in the record.
