Moraine Elementary students showcase leadership; board presents staff awards

Students at Moraine Elementary gave the Northville Public Schools Board a detailed look at school life Wednesday night, emphasizing leadership, teamwork and character as core parts of the school’s theme.

Principal Joe Grama opened the presentation, saying, “my name is Joe Grama, and I am the very grateful principal here at Moraine Elementary,” and described the night as a brief glimpse into day‑to‑day learning. Elementary students identified leadership, learning through challenge and teamwork as priorities; they described the school’s leadership‑ticket program, explained how monthly selections are made by a Student Lighthouse Team, and offered examples of small acts — holding doors, greeting peers, helping at recess — that earn recognition.

The presentation included student reflections on community events and facilities: students said they enjoy school fundraisers such as the fun fair and roller‑skating nights and welcomed news of playground upgrades and a planned lunchroom renovation expected to finish next year. Board members asked students how they felt about construction; students replied they were excited even if the process might be “messy,” and administrators confirmed they would manage disruptions.

After the student presentations, the board and superintendent recognized several employees with ABCD (above and beyond the call of duty) awards. Teachers and support staff honored included Olivia Wren (third‑grade teacher), Katie (resource room teacher), Amy Heisner (Thornton Creek), and Jennifer Savage (Old Village School), among others. The nominations, read aloud by board members, cited consistent communication, classroom impact and long‑term connections with students and families.

The board invited families and students to a group photo behind the dais to mark the evening. The presentation and awards were part of a regular board meeting held at Moraine Elementary.
