Summary
At its Dec. 9 meeting the Mayor and Board of Aldermen approved multiple 2026 beer and liquor permits, certified partial payments to contractors (including a $1.53 million utility payment), and passed a resolution declaring retired fire turnout gear surplus and subject to disposal.
The Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Crowley approved a slate of permits, contract payments and a surplus resolution at their Dec. 9 meeting.
Council members voted to approve three Class A retail beer and liquor permit applications that did not go through committee review: El Dorado Mexican Restaurant, ConFit Catering LLC and RJ Chavez Incorporated (operating as La Roomba). The approvals followed a Public Safety Committee recommendation; Alderman Core/Coore moved and council carried the motions on voice vote with Alderman Sammy Reggie recorded as recused from related committee votes.
The council also approved a number of contract-related payments recommended by standing committees. The Utility Committee’s action included approval of partial payment estimate No. 1 in the amount of $1,534,677.50 to Springs Construction Inc. for the project described as “renovate existing duckweed pond and modular insulated covering.” The Zoning and Annexation Committee’s report included approval of a partial payment estimate of $201,029.14 to C O D Construction of Louisiana LLC for drainage improvements for Lawrence Acres and VFW Drive, and a change order for $2,100 to furnish and install corrugated metal pipe and extend contract time by 15 days. The Public Buildings Committee presented partial payment No. 13 to Prestige Construction Group for the park and pavilion project in the amount of $141,602.16; that payment was carried by the council.
On the consent/resolution side, council adopted a resolution declaring certain retired fire department turnout gear, helmets, gloves and other personal protective equipment owned by the city to be surplus, junk and subject to destruction and disposal. During discussion Alderman Vernon Martin questioned whether outdated gear could be used for training by other departments; an unidentified speaker cited National Fire Protection Association guidance and a 10-year maximum service life for turnout gear, noting safety and liability risks for used equipment.
Council also approved a cooperative endeavor amendment between the city and the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission (agreement dated March 15, 2021) to reimburse the commission up to $1,000 annually for the audit of the Crowley hotel occupancy tax account. The board agreed to cosponsor a Martin Luther King event with the Delta Sigma Theta sorority by waiving the MLK Building fee for Jan. 19, 2026.
The meeting record shows routine committee reports, motions offered by aldermen and several brief recusals; where committee minutes were read, council then offered and carried the committee motions.
The meeting adjourned after routine business.
