Council committees approve fire grants and consider formal MOUs with industrial fire departments

Council voted to forward the Port Security Grant allocation of $955,811 with a favorable recommendation; the department confirmed matching capital funds exist in the citys capital plan for the estimated $1.3 million vessel cost.
Separately, the city forwarded a $76,960 Assistance to Firefighters Grant to acquire 120 battery-powered suction devices so each fire truck has an improved powered suction unit to enhance on-scene patient care. Presenters confirmed the devices provide operational improvement over current manual suction devices.
The committee also reviewed two interagency automatic-aid agreements (Valero and FedEx). Fire leadership said the agreements formalize longstanding operational aid arrangements and clarify that the state-recognized industrial fire departments on private property have authority as the "authority having jurisdiction," with MFD providing specified off-property assistance or on-property assistance when requested. Committee members requested to review the signed agreements in hand before final approval; legal staff confirmed they had already reviewed the documents.
Representative quote: "We conducted a needs assessment... and we discovered that we were woefully inadequate," a fire battalion chief said while describing the need for improved river response and the proposed 3,000-gpm fireboat.
