Sunnyside’s fire chief explained Dec. 1 that a proposed interlocal agreement with Yakima County Fire District 5 would formalize automatic aid for structure fires and allow the city to count those outside resources toward its first‑alarm response in Washington Survey & Rating Bureau (WSRB) evaluations.
Chief said the arrangement differs from mutual aid in that response by the partner agency is dispatched automatically (without a separate request), but he emphasized safeguards in the agreement: Sunnyside would not be required to empty its station if doing so would leave the city uncovered, and outside resources would be released as soon as the incident is manageable. He said the city already maintains automatic‑aid arrangements with Grandview and Mabton.
Councilors raised concerns that Sunnyside could be asked to provide disproportionate support to volunteer-heavy neighboring departments and that responding to outside calls could increase wear, mileage and overtime costs; the chief and staff replied the agreement is reciprocal and contains termination language if a partner arrangement becomes burdensome. The chief said the agreement is intended to improve the region’s effectiveness on larger incidents and to strengthen Sunnyside’s WSRB credit for first‑alarm response.
Council agreed to add the interlocal agreement to the Monday consent agenda for routine approval rather than take action at the study session.
