District staff presented a 'spotlight' on Strategic Plan Goal 3, focusing on reducing chronic absenteeism and improving staff and student wellbeing. “Our goal is to be below that 5% level,” the teaching-and-learning presenter said when describing the chronic-absence objective and added that mid-year the district was at roughly 0.5% but cautioned that absences often rise in late spring.
On attendance processes, staff described a tiered intervention model (school-level tiers 1a/1b/1c, district tier 2, and tier 3 with legal counsel and courts), new data dashboards, and use of ParentSquare to notify parents in real time and provide a barrier-resolution link so families can report reasons for absences. “With that email, there is a link to the barrier resolution where the parent can click on that link and then share with us what is the cause for the absences,” the presenter said.
Board members recommended using data-driven messaging for outreach and asked for breakdowns by teacher, grade or school to identify hotspots. “I think we need to underscore it with some data,” one board member said, urging messaging that ties attendance to graduation and assessment outcomes to motivate families.
Staff also reported the district-owned wellness center has exceeded the participation goal (39.7% employee participation vs. a 36% target). Joshua, a district wellness lead, said the early milestone reflects incentives, communication and on-site visits and that staff will continue to monitor and refine hours and telehealth options to sustain participation.
Board members asked for historical context and requested ongoing tracking. Staff noted the prior full school year ended at 8.8% chronic absenteeism and said the district will continue intentional interventions to reach its 5% target.
