Germantown committee okays $20,000 start to ArcGIS Online migration

The Public Works and Highway Committee voted unanimously to authorize up to $20,000 to begin a phased transition to Esri’s ArcGIS Online, staff said.
Staff member Matt said the funding represents roughly half of a planned $40,000 budget for moving the village’s geographic information system to a cloud-based platform. Sharon, the staff GIS lead, told the committee, “ArcGIS Online is a cloud based … platform that allow us to create data, share maps, and develop apps in a web browser or mobile devices.”
Committee members discussed migration pace and continuity. Sharon said the existing system will remain available during the transition until the new system “is as capable or more than the current system,” and emphasized the project will be phased to avoid data loss. Staff said ArcGIS offers easier integration with asset-management systems and should reduce consultant costs over time.
The authorization covers initial services and implementation work; staff said additional funding will be requested for a separate user-interface product expected to consume the remainder of the $40,000. The committee approved the authorization and recommended moving forward with the phased migration plan.
The committee asked staff to return with implementation timelines and regular updates as the migration proceeds.
