Board holds first public hearing on calendars that would start school earlier and align breaks

The Cannon Falls School Board opened the first of three public hearings required for a state application to start the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years earlier and to standardize breaks. The calendar committee, which includes teachers and administrators, presented two calendar options that would begin school roughly two weeks earlier than a Labor Day start and provide a consistent spring break each year.
Committee members said the intent is to create natural semester breaks (ending a semester at Christmas), provide more instructional time ahead of MCA testing and spread conferences and professional learning more evenly through the year. Staff cautioned that the district must apply to and obtain state approval to start earlier and that the board will seek public comment at two subsequent January meetings before taking final action.
Board members discussed tradeoffs — concerns about younger students’ attention in late May and effects on fall extracurricular schedules — and asked about survey input and staff outreach. The board did not vote on the calendars at the hearing; if state approval is not granted, staff noted a September 1 start is a fallback option allowed by state rules.
