Kathy Burrows was elected president of the Lawndale Elementary School District governing board and Anne Phillips was elected clerk during the board's reorganizational actions at the start of the regular meeting. Trustees moved and seconded nominations; both nominees accepted their nominations and each motion passed unanimously, recorded as "Motion carries 5 0."
The board also appointed a representative to the California School Boards Association delegate assembly and to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association, and named Superintendent Virginia Castro as secretary to the board for the coming year. Each of those motions passed by unanimous votes. The board approved its calendar of meeting dates for the 2025'26 school year and adopted routine consent items (8.03 through 8.12) and minutes of the Nov. 20, 2025 meeting in single-motion votes.
During the superintendent action items, the superintendent staff briefed trustees on recent state legislation (Assembly Bill 1390) affecting school-board compensation. The presentation noted that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1390 (updating Education Code section 35120) to raise the statutory maximum monthly compensation for school-board members; the superintendent said Lawndale's maximum under the formula is $1,200 and that current stipends in the district would increase from about $252 to about $264.60 per month under the law. Trustees approved the listed superintendent action items in a single motion that carried 5-0.
The reorganizational votes and consent approvals concluded the meeting's procedural business and moved the board into scheduled presentations and member reports. The board will reconvene for any additional scheduled actions in subsequent meetings.
