Geneva will pursue funding for West Main and 534/84 traffic improvements; engineers updating designs

City Manager Marquette updated the City of Geneva council on Dec. 8 about the West Main Street project and a separate effort to address left‑turn safety at the SR 534/84 corridor.
Marquette said the West Main contractor is working on driveways and catch basins and that reopening the road to two‑way traffic is weather‑dependent; staff and contractor planned a site meeting to review remaining work and winter maintenance. He said the city will be responsible for plowing and salting West Main once the road is opened.
On the turning‑arrow and traffic‑signal request raised during public comment, Marquette said engineers are updating prior projections and that the city intends to pursue funding in OPWC round 41 and other sources. He noted a prior 2022 estimate of about $297,000 for upgrading that intersection’s infrastructure and said additional data (including crash history and traffic counts) will strengthen grant applications. "We're talking close to $300,000 for the upgrading of that infrastructure," Marquette said.
Residents also raised historical signage replacement and snow‑removal concerns. The manager said staff have schematics for REO/historical signs and are awaiting a finalized vehicle depiction for historically accurate designs; sign costs looked reasonable in preliminary estimates. On snow removal the manager reiterated the city’s priority is to keep roadways passable and that sidewalk and building‑front clearing is addressed when crews can safely move piled snow during major storms.
Council directed staff to continue design updates, pursue OPWC and other funding rounds and report back to council as project proposals are finalized.
