West Main paving delayed in one section; street department reports chip sealing and maintenance wins

City staff provided the council with an update on West Main Street and general street department activity at the Nov. 24 meeting.
City Manager Bartlett and street department night-shift representative Mike described recent accomplishments: about 50 tons of coal patch used ($6,300), $3,500 spent on stone to maintain a dirt road, 10 catch basins rebuilt, replacement of rusted steel grates, and striping of major roads largely completed at a favorable price. Mike said the department completed about 1.25 miles of chip sealing at an estimated cost of $98,000.
Bartlett said paving crews have placed intermediate pavement in most areas and that a section west of Lockwood will be deferred to spring because the asphalt batch plant closed earlier than expected; officials said the intermediate pavement will allow lanes to remain open for winter traffic while final pavement is scheduled for spring. Staff also noted snow pickup readiness and veteran leaf pickup continuing through the end of next week, weather permitting.
Questions from council and citizens clarified that 'intermediate code' pavement means the road will be passable for traffic but may not have the final riding surface until spring.
