The San Juan County Commission voted to accept a memorandum of understanding enabling missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to volunteer at county senior centers.
Ms. Gallegos, who presented the MOU, said the organization provided a work plan and that senior center staff would supervise volunteers at all times. "They're not to be left with the seniors alone," she said, noting state law considers seniors vulnerable adults and that supervision is a contractual requirement.
Commissioners asked about placement and monitoring; Ms. Gallegos said the initial interest is for the Monticello center but the MOU allows other centers to request volunteers without redoing the agreement. Commissioners discussed transportation and the practicalities of rotating volunteers between centers. Commissioner Harvey said he supported expanding opportunities countywide if demand and logistics permit.
The commission made and seconded a motion to approve the MOU and the motion carried. Staff will execute the document so missionaries can begin assisting with meal service and other non-clinical activities under staff supervision.
What—s next: County staff will sign the MOU and coordinate placements with senior center directors.
