Pleasanton — A resident urged the City Council to pay greater attention to visible homelessness in downtown Pleasanton and said his observations suggest the city’s point‑in‑time count may understate the number of unsheltered residents.
At public comment Rashad Praveen recounted multiple recent observations of people without shelter in downtown locations and at bus stops, saying the city’s 2024 point‑in‑time count recorded 70 unsheltered people but that he personally has seen “at least over 50” in a four‑month period and worries many are not counted.
City staff responded that the city operates an Alternative Response Unit (ARU) and partners with nonprofit organizations to provide outreach and services; staff said police clinicians also engage on mental‑health issues affecting people without shelter and invited the resident to discuss volunteer opportunities and a new unhoused resources program that will begin soon.
Staff did not provide an alternative point‑in‑time figure during the exchange.
The council did not take action on the comment but staff offered follow‑up contact to connect the resident with volunteer and outreach options.
