Chittenden Solid Waste District reports MERF groundbreaking, site clear of archaeological sensitivity; equipment installation expected summer 2026

The Chittenden Solid Waste District provided the board with an update on the Materials Recovery Facility (MERF) project on Nov. 19, reporting a successful groundbreaking and an on-site project manager assignment.
Executive Director Sarah said the district held a ceremonial groundbreaking that included state Secretary Drew Moore and that project manager Kaylee Barber has moved her office to the compost facility to be close to the construction site. Staff reported a desktop archaeological review found the revised building location is not near sensitive areas and that the siting avoids the main wetland area.
Sarah told the board that concrete had not yet been poured but that the schedule anticipates slab work soon. Equipment already procured is in staged storage and will be delivered in sections; staff confirmed the district is covering storage and insurance costs. Installation is on track to begin in July 2026 and is expected to take about 8–12 weeks, followed by acceptance testing and staged commissioning through the fall.
Staff said they will provide monthly updates and photographs to keep commissioners informed as construction and equipment install progress.
