The Lufkin City Council approved on second reading an ordinance rezoning approximately 4.8 acres at 1510–1514 Atkinson Drive from residential medium to commercial and amending the future land-use plan to a corridor commercial classification.
City staff told the council the request would align the zoning with current use and allow an existing residential structure to be occupied as office space. Staff said properties along Atkinson generally carry commercial designations and described the corridor commercial designation as intended for commercial service corridors. Officials said 15 notices were mailed to nearby property owners and the city received six letters in favor; the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval with a condition that access to Trenton Street be limited to passenger vehicles and that semi trucks and pump trucks use Atkinson Drive for access.
Council heard no public comment during the hearing, then approved the second reading by voice vote.
