The Prattville Planning Commission on Oct. 16 voted to recommend rezoning approximately 123.51 acres at 1320 Old Ridge Road from FAR (Forest, Agriculture & Recreational) to Institutional, following a staff presentation and public comments from the college’s project engineer.
Staff noted the future land-use map already shows institutional use for the site and reviewed dimensional and parking standards under the Code of Alabama. The project engineer, Corey Shoup, said the college is pursuing rezoning to match existing campus uses and to accommodate a proposed workforce development training facility commonly being added at community colleges across the state.
A nearby homeowner, Constance Reese of Glenbrook subdivision, whose backyard borders the property, asked that the existing treeline be preserved to maintain the wooded view behind her lot. Staff and commissioners clarified the day’s action was rezoning only; buffer and site-plan details would be reviewed administratively. Planning staff said the city’s incompatible-land-use buffer requirement between institutional and residential uses will be enforced when a site plan is submitted.
The commission read and moved a resolution recommending the rezoning to the governing body; the motion passed on a voice vote. The rezoning recommendation does not itself authorize construction; subsequent site-plan review and permits will determine final building placement and buffering.
