Okaloosa County seeks seasonal lifeguards; pay starts at $23 an hour

Lieutenant Hertel, a head lifeguard on Okaloosa Island, invited applicants to join Okaloosa County’s seasonal lifeguard team and outlined pay, training and how to apply.
Hertel said new lifeguards will start at $23 an hour, returning lifeguards will start at $23.50 an hour and certified emergency medical technicians will receive an additional $0.50 per hour. “If you are enthusiastic about being part of a team, challenging yourself mentally and physically, this could be the place for you to work,” Hertel said.
County lifeguard staff will provide multiple training opportunities, Hertel said, including hands-on first-responder techniques, basic life support (BLS) certification and basic lifesaving certification. He said physical training and instruction on water rescues are part of the onboarding process and encouraged applicants who enjoy the work to consider advancing to EMT training or other emergency-response roles.
To apply, Hertel directed interested people to myokaloosa.com and to search for “beach safety” to find the application, and offered a county phone number for help with the process: (850) 259-4131. “If the application process is a little bit confusing for you, feel free to call our senior staff,” he said.
The announcement frames the hiring push as both a public-safety measure to staff Okaloosa Island beaches and an entry point into first-responder careers. The county did not announce hiring deadlines or the number of positions available at the time of the announcement.
