Summary
Local NAACP leaders and voting‑rights organizers told the delegation to resist any mid‑decade redistricting, warning proposed maps would dilute Black and other marginalized communities' influence and urging adherence to the voter‑approved Fair Districts Amendment.
Local civil‑rights and voting‑rights advocates urged the Okaloosa County legislative delegation to oppose proposed mid‑decade redistricting and to comply with the Fair Districts Amendment.
Sabu Williams of the Okaloosa County NAACP said the governor's proposed congressional map would weaken Black and marginalized communities' ability to elect candidates of their choice, claiming the configuration would increase Republican representation from 20 to 26 of Florida's 28 U.S. House seats. "Just say no to redistricting in the state," Williams said.
Jackie Steele, North Florida field manager for Equal Ground, asked the delegation to resist mid‑decade plans, adhere to the Fair Districts rules adopted by voters and ensure notice, accessibility and meaningful public comment in any redistricting process. "Public participation strengthens the process and builds trust in the outcome," Steele said.
Speakers cited the 2010 Fair Districts Amendment and recent poll figures as context. Delegation members accepted public comment and materials but did not adopt a resolution or take formal action at the meeting.
