Gonzales council adopts 2025 California building standards with local amendments

The Gonzales City Council voted to adopt updated building standards by introducing Ordinance 2025-154, which replaces Chapter 11.04 of the Gonzales City Code and adopts the 2025 editions of the California Building Code, California Residential Code, California Electrical Code, California Mechanical Code, California Plumbing Code, California Energy Code and related parts, along with the 2024 International Property Maintenance Code.
Staff said the updates reflect statewide triennial revisions that emphasize improved seismic standards, enhanced fire and emergency-safety requirements and updated energy and solar provisions for new and existing construction. The city's fire chief recommended local amendments to maintain a high level of fire protection, including sprinkler requirements for certain occupancies.
Staff noted a small one-time expense to purchase paper copies of the new codes for the city's files (about $2,000), to be paid from building services fees. Council waived the full reading of the ordinance and adopted it by voice vote.
The ordinance was introduced and will be processed consistent with normal municipal code adoption procedures.
