Director Smith told the Planning and Zoning Commission on Dec. 18 that the city council approved moving forward with a contract with Inspire Placemaking Collective Incorporated to conduct a complete rewrite of the city's zoning ordinance.
Smith said the contract duration is ‘‘12 to 18 months’’ and that the consultants will produce draft sections the planning commission and a zoning steering committee will review and provide feedback on during multiple meetings. Smith said the steering committee has already been formed and community input will be embedded into the process. Commissioners asked whether community input would occur; Smith confirmed there will be opportunities for community engagement and described the planning commission's oversight role in reviewing draft sections.
Specific budget amounts, the contract start date, and a detailed schedule were not provided at the meeting. Smith compared the process to the prior comprehensive-plan rewrite but said the zoning rewrite will be more detailed because it addresses policy, code, and ordinance language.
