Frank Paul Elementary spotlights new community room, expanded after-school and partnerships

At Monday's Alisal Union board meeting, Frank Paul Elementary staff detailed new facilities and programs they say are improving attendance and family engagement.
Principal Miguel Porras reported the school serves 642 students (preschool through sixth grade), with 58% identified as English learners and 144 students identified under McKinney-Vento. Porras said the site has set three new instructional goals for 2025-26 focused on strengthening foundational language skills, implementing ELD across grades 1-6 and using i-Ready data for targeted small-group instruction.
Alexis Diaz Infante, Frank Paul's community school coordinator, described a community room opened in August that was furnished through donations from Partners for Peace, Safeway, Heritage Harvesting, 1 on 1 Exterminators, Ramco and Elba Montero. She recognized artist Adrian Cornejo for a mural and said the Sergio Seja family donated turkeys for holiday distribution.
Diaz said the community room hosts parent workshops and cafecitos and is being used to reduce chronic absenteeism by making student voice and incentives central to attendance efforts: students voted for field trips as a top attendance incentive and about 230 students (presentation language approximated participation) attended the first trimester field trip.
On after-school services, Assistant Principal Jorge Martinez said the program runs three 45-minute rotations daily (homework rotation, physical education rotation and enrichment rotation) with enrichment offerings that change every six weeks (guitar, Lego, theater, coding, dance, and other activities).

What the board asked: Trustees sought clarification on long-term English learner (LTEL) counts and the definition of "at risk" LTELs; Porras explained LTEL status generally applies to students with five or more years in U.S. schools who have not yet reclassified on the ELPAC.
