Labor, education committee delays Board of Education appointment after key members absent

Unidentified Speaker 1, who opened the meeting and handled logistics, said the group would wait a few minutes but acknowledged the absence of colleagues and counsel. "We will call a special meeting of this committee if it's way before that because this needs to get done," the speaker said, thanking the candidate "for presenting yourself and wanting to, serve on the board of ed." The meeting was broadcast on HPA TV and streamed through multiple platforms, the chair noted.
Members discussed scheduling options rather than conducting a vote. Unidentified Speaker 2 apologized for not confirming attendance and noted that notifications had been sent twice; both speakers said corporate counsel was not on the call. Charmaine Craig, identified as working at City Hall, was present on the call, but the lack of counsel and other members prevented formal action.
A participant who asked to be called Maddie said she expected to be sworn in at the Board of Education's December meeting if the appointment proceeds then. Committee members said they needed the item on the December council agenda — identified in discussion as the second Monday in December ("the eighth") — and agreed to either find a special meeting date or complete the business before that deadline.
The committee also referenced a separate superintendent forum occurring the same evening, described as a public opportunity for RTC, DTC members and others to meet the new superintendent and ask about his vision for Hartford. It was not clear how widely that forum had been publicized.
No formal motion, vote, or appointment was recorded during the session. Unidentified Speaker 1 said staff would "figure out what happened" with the absent participants and called for a follow-up meeting; the group closed without taking the appointment to a vote.
The committee plans to notify stakeholders and will either schedule a special meeting or place the appointment on the next available agenda so the Board of Education nomination can be finalized before the December council deadline.
