Seminole County directs staff to begin pilot septic-to-sewer project amid steep cost estimates

Seminole County commissioners on Dec. 9 heard a technical briefing on septic-to-sewer and advanced on-site septic options and gave staff direction to move forward with a pilot project in a Wekiva priority focus area using existing grant funds.
Utilities Director Johnny Edwards and consultant Dr. Robert Rees told the board that state watershed protections and Basin Management Action Plans (BMAPs) and the 2016 Springs and Aquifer Protection Act create a requirement to remediate septic systems on parcels of one acre or less in certain priority focus areas by 2038. Dr. Rees said the work arises from efforts to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus reaching springs and groundwater.
