The El Paso ISD Education Foundation presented its annual update to trustees on Nov. 18 and announced what foundation staff described as the largest gift in the foundation's history: a scholarship contribution from Southwest University characterized during the meeting as a "half $1,000,000" check.
Daniel Vasquez (fund development officer) said the donation will expand scholarship opportunities for underserved students and deepen partnerships. Russell Booth (director) summarized the foundation's compliance work since taking on leadership in early 2024, noting the organization updated mailing addresses, bylaws, committee structures and board membership to qualify for grant funding and improve fundraising viability.
Booth said the foundation raised just under $200,000 last year and distributed about $84,000 in scholarships. He credited volunteers, board members and the expanded committee structure for improved grant eligibility and attendance at fundraising events ranging from the State of the District to a golf tournament and the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Trustees thanked the foundation and recognized volunteer leaders. The board did not take formal action related to the gift at the meeting; the presentation served as an annual report and public acknowledgment of the donation.
