County pauses AI data‑center review and flags costs, trademark issues for proposed airport renaming

WEST PALM BEACH — At a joint county commission and legislative delegation workshop, lawmakers pressed county staff about an AI data‑center proposal, emerging air taxi plans and a bill that would rename Palm Beach International Airport.
Senator Tina Polsky asked county staff to describe the AI data‑center proposal and its implications. County officials said the project is on pause and will return to the Board of County Commissioners in April; they characterized parts of the matter as potentially quasi‑judicial because of existing property‑owner interests.
Airport Director Laura Beebe described a previously approved Vertiport location at Palm Beach International and said the county is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to review airspace. She clarified the county has no agreement with any aircraft manufacturer (for example, Archer Aviation) but said an agnostic Vertiport developer could partner with a manufacturer.
On SB706 — legislation that would shift airport‑naming authority to the state and propose renaming PBIA — Beebe and other county staff warned of potential fiscal impacts (costs to change signage and branding), trademark and legal concerns, and the risk of royalty or permission fees tied to a private brand. Beebe said the county will work with legislators to address those issues.
