The Bernalillo County Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 10 voted to introduce a financing framework under the Local Economic Development Act to pursue legislative funding for redevelopment of a county‑owned property on 4th Street into an All‑Ages community center and entrepreneurial hub.
Commissioner Barbara Baca, sponsor of the item, said the location is adjacent to YES Housing affordable housing and that the proposal would convert the building’s cold shell into community space, an entrepreneurial retail area and programming space. Director Marcos Gonzales (Economic Development) said the county will seek up to $15,000,000 from the Legislature and partner with YES Housing Cayakwerta Retail 2 LLC to build out tenant improvements; YES Housing projects an estimated 8 full‑time and 25 part‑time private jobs connected to tenant businesses.
Commissioners asked for detail on ongoing operating costs, maintenance responsibilities for commercial kitchens and tenant selection criteria. County staff said lease payments and tenant fees would be structured to support sinking funds for maintenance and that the county would continue community engagement before final commitments. The item was introduced and later adopted by a 5‑0 vote as an introductory LITA resolution; final funding and contractual terms will return to the board after further vetting and community meetings.
