Daly City Public Library Associates (DCPLA) announced on Oct. 21 that it received a $15,000 grant from Genentech to fund a project called "Encouraging Early Literacy, Revitalizing the Library Children's Room" at the Saramonti branch.
"DCPLA recently received a grant of $15,000 from Genentech to fund the library's project, the library's project named Encouraging Early Literacy, Revitalizing the Library Children's Room," DCPLA director Bernie Vidal said, describing plans to modernize the children’s area with new furniture and interactive elements aimed at encouraging early literacy.
Vidal said many Daly City families rely on library spaces for free, safe places where children can learn and play and that the Saramonti children’s area has become outdated. He highlighted DCPLA’s recent art-and-literature festival at Ceramante Mall, which DCPLA said raised more than $9,500 in sponsorships and was supported in part by the grant and by a contract with a community marketing specialist.
DCPLA staff also noted outreach plans, including participation in the city’s trunk-or-treat event and social-media promotion of future activities. Trustees thanked DCPLA for grant-seeking and community engagement and encouraged continued advocacy for library funding.
Next steps: DCPLA will coordinate with library staff to implement the project at Saramonti; the board did not set a public timeline for completion in the meeting record.
