Board approves $77,007.75 purchase of lagoon aerators to cut odors and reduce downtime

Brandy Vath, wastewater manager, asked the board to approve the purchase of two 60-horsepower AquaJet aerators and two 20-horsepower aquamixers from Aqua Aerobic Systems for $77,007.75 to replace aging lagoon equipment and provide on-site spares.
"The wastewater division is requesting approval to award the purchase of 2 60 horsepower aqua jet aerators and 2 20 horsepower aquamixers to Aqua Aerobic Systems Incorporated in the amount of $77,007.75," the presenter said, outlining that the existing lagoon aerators were installed about 2005 and that new equipment will help with BOD reduction and odor control.
Board members asked for operational detail. Vath said the new units are expected to last "at least 10 to 15 years," that sending units out for rehab typically takes 12–16 weeks depending on the repair (electrical or mechanical), and that a rehabbed unit might last "somewhere in between 5 to 10 years." Vath also estimated a typical rehab cost at roughly $15,000–$20,000, depending on parts and motor work.
Staff said Aqua Aerobic Systems is the sole provider of the specific equipment that matches the existing floating devices on the lagoons, and replacing with a different vendor would require retrofitting floats and could increase costs. The board approved the purchase following a motion and vocal vote.
Next steps: staff will complete the purchase and add the spare units to inventory, allowing for unit rehabilitation without taking lagoons offline.
