Columbus approves $45,200 tree-inventory contract for parks; staff says project is fully grant-funded

The Columbus City Council on Dec. 15 adopted resolution R25-156 to hire JEO Consulting Group Inc. for a Columbus Park facilities tree inventory in an amount not to exceed $45,200.
Councilmembers questioned the cost during deliberations. Staff responded the project is 100% funded through the Nebraska Forestry Service and is more than a count: the inventory will identify species, age and health of trees, provide GIS mapping and produce a report that will prioritize trees for maintenance or removal and support future grant applications. Staff also said the inventory will help diversify species in the city's canopy to reduce risk from disease.
The motion to adopt the resolution passed by voice vote. Staff indicated they expect to use the report to pursue additional funding for work identified as beyond normal city maintenance.
