Norwalk fire department outlines equipment upgrades, new accountability tech and training schedule

Norwalk City fire officials told the commission on Dec. 16 that multiple capital and training initiatives are underway, including a new self-contained-breathing-apparatus (SCBA) fleet, a digital accountability system and updated station renovations.

Staff reported that design drawings for the Station 4 renovation are nearing completion and that a Norwalk construction manager, AB Tucci, has been retained to manage the work. The department said all new SCBA equipment has been received and that a high-pressure fill station required to service the new high-pressure bottles remains to be installed.

Officials described a Panasonic-based SEMS accountability system that will register each bottle by ID, monitor remaining air for each assigned position, trigger alarms if a crew member runs low and allow command-post staff to run instant personnel-accountability reports. The department said the system will also support evacuation-tone functions and assist incident commanders in tracking acknowledgements during complex incidents.

The commission heard that a new command vehicle is in service and a tactical-support vehicle has already responded to calls; specification work is underway for a ladder truck funded in the current capital budget year. Training staff said roof-rope-rescue training has been completed department-wide and will be reinforced over the coming weeks; driver-operator training runs most weekends and an EMS refresher and SCBA training are scheduled to begin in January and run into February.

Training staff also said they have conditional permission to use part of Norwalk Hospital’s building for controlled training evolutions pending final legal clearance. Department leaders emphasized that equipment upgrades will be paired with refresher training and maintenance protocols to ensure safe operations.
