The Personnel Department presented an interim budget request for nine positions to support an LAPD hiring unit established under Executive Directive 14, saying the department has been reallocating staff temporarily and needs a permanent supervisory structure to sustain timely recruitments.
Personnel said the interim request would cover the period through the end of the fiscal year and that a larger set of position requests for FY26–27 has been submitted to the mayor’s office. The department emphasized that, even if LAPD does not receive additional funding to hire more officers this year, personnel will need a stable team to continue recruitment work.
LAPD representatives told the committee a class (Class 56) will start Dec. 15 and that, if funding were available, a January class could be roughly 40–45 recruits. LAPD cautioned that many candidates hold test parts with a one‑year expiration; a delay in offers could cause some candidates to fall off the eligibility list and require retesting.
The committee thanked personnel and LAPD for the update, asked for cost estimates per class and clarification on how many candidates might lose eligibility if academy dates slip, and held the item pending more information expected later the same day or in the coming hours.
